South Shore Step One 5 Drawer Chest Black
Reviewed in Canada on December 5, 2019 Color Name: Pure White Verified Purchase The media could not be loaded. Good value for money. In my video you can see how the drawers are very floppy and flimsy. I assembled this myself, exactly as you should. Nothing is loose, all the bolts and screws are there, but the tracks are just flimsy. I can see it being a bigger problem after a few years of use. Overall I'm happy for sure. Images in this review Reviewed in Canada on November 6, 2020 Color Name: Pure White Verified Purchase I ordered this when it was on sale. At sale price it was very worth the money. The regular price I find a bit too much but seems like most 5 drawer dressers run about the price or a bit more. Assembly was easy. You probably should have 2 people build it together although I did it myself with little issues. It's very sturdy and great quality. I really like "south shore furniture". Great for kids rooms and I have 3 kids. Never had an issue with any furniture I got from them. I would definately purchase more furniture from them again. 5 star Reviewed in Canada on August 4, 2020 Color Name: Black Verified Purchase Nice buy from Amazon..This is a solid cabinet made of hardwood ..you can easily tell by its weight..SOOOOO HEAVY!! When I started to assemble the dresser everything was coming together as per the instructions. Unfortunately, the screws were not staying in place and the dresser kept coming apart. I finally got it completed, the body of the dresser is fine, but the (5) draws have completely fell apart. Needless to say, I will be taking it apart and throwing it in the garbage. I'm very disappointment because I did like the way it looked after it was finished. Reviewed in Canada on July 4, 2021 Color Name: Gray Oak Verified Purchase Item itself is more than presentable.. It's not super high quality but, it's not cheap garbage either. That being said mine arrived with a broken piece which was a pain to try and deal with. I ended up just fixing the piece as it was a hidden support anyways. I built it alone and it probably took 2 hours. I wouldn't suggest others do it alone though. Drawers slide well and it really presents well. Overall I'm still happy but, doubt it stands the test of time as its on my teenagers room. It moves even with the drawers in it and they don't match up on the sides. The top sags so you can't close the top drawer properly. I was afraid to move it when it was all together it felt like it was going to fall apart. I needed a dresser and this one won because I wanted the matching bed frame and side tables that I will still get. All and all it is an good dresser for the price. Reviews with images

I was following the steps closely and after step 9 you have Install a backboard to the unit, when I squeezed it in the whole unit broke apart! I'm so upset as now I have a HUGE and HEAVY package to return and I am beyond stressed out in means to do so. I am in a huge moving process and I currently don't drive. I am very upset. Be a lesson no matter how close you follow instructions always be mindful!
This dresser is beautiful and felt very sturdy. I hope if another replacement does come I can give another accurate review

-solid frame
-not noisey when opening drawers
-High quality feel and look
-Heavy and not too easy to assemble (the heaviness can be seen as a PRO though. It is to me)
-can attract dust, so use a wood shiner on it every 2 months

5.0 out of 5 stars I can understand the bad comments - here's the solution:

First off: when assembled properly, this thing is great for the price, and exceptionally attractive. That being said - I understand the bad reviews, meaning "I think I understand what went wrong". I'm glad that I had a 4 year stint assembling cheap furniture for a retail store way back in my college years. I learned some tips and tricks then that really helped out here. This particular dresser relies (RELIES) on one particular post-and-cam hardware, and if you don't get that properly installed and tightened, this thing will fall apart, the drawers will fall apart - all the complaints you've read. This post has a tapered metal shaft inside that plastic sleeve. It's designed to pull TIGHT, wedging itself inside the plastic, pushing the plastic out, intentionally deforming the plastic to lock solidly into the pre-drilled holes. If you do that, it'll hold securely and firmly! -- Make sure the post is seated properly and fully. Tap with a light rubber mallet or your fist - if you understand what 'gentle' means. Also- Regardless of the reason - if you DON'T fully turn the cam, you in turn DON'T drive the metal post up, you in turn don't cause that squeeze-out on the plastic bit, and you don't lock the plastic into the pre-drilled holes. Since EVERY panel is held together with this system... Well, you can see the photos from the complainers of what you end up with. If you mitigate those risks as I described, you'll wind up with one sharp looking dresser. Only real criticism of the finished product that I have is that the laminate seems thin, likely somewhat easy to scratch - fortunately my cheap furniture experience has taught me to fix scratches as well - and they do include a pen to dab and smear should you scratch it.
I hope this helps future buyers:
It need not be. It's fine. Do this:
-- When you assemble, turn the cam a FULL180 degrees - you'll feel it click, and finally stop.
-- Turn the cam with a medium FLAT HEAD screwdriver. Yes, it's shaped like a plus. That doesn't mean phillips - those are flat grooves, you will NOT get the leverage you need with a phillips screwdriver, you will NOT get the cams to pop, to fully lock. The only "pop" you'll feel is the screwdriver tip popping off the cam before it's tight!
-- Add just a dab of glue to each dowel and make sure they are fully seated.
-- Do the same to the other end of each dowel as you assemble the pieces together.
This will safeguard your furniture - it'll stay together even if that post-and-cam hardware gets loose.

Set your expectations for what you ordered and this is jokay. It is definitely cheap laminated pressboard, but I only paid a little over a hundred dollars apiece for 2 of them so I wasn't expecting solid oak legacy furniture. If you go slowly and pay attention, the directions were clear, though thank goodness I got 2 of these since one included instructions for a platform bed, rather than the dresser. As long as you're careful about your angles and placement everything lined up fine and went together like it was supposed to without a fuss on both of them. Took me a couple hours apiece watching TV, but I did it myself with a screwdriver and hammer, so not difficult. You do need to assemble on the cardboard as dragging around on tile will scratch the finish, but I managed with only 1 little scratch on one of them and they include a cover marker so no biggie. They aren't 100% square, the bottoms are about 1" apart while the tops meet as you can see in the photo, but they're sturdy enough I think. ***UPDATE: It's been less than a year and one of the 2 of these has had basically all of the drawer fronts just rip right off the drawers with normal gentle use. Really frustrated and not sure what to do now since the other one is still okay. Don't want to buy another of these, but need to replace the junk.

For the price of this dresser, I wasn't expecting a really good quality and solid dresser like the ones that I could buy in a furniture store or even off of craigslist at this point. But this is the worst piece of furniture that I have ever purchased on the internet. I am in college and I had a lot of furniture to assemble, so I hired a qualified handyman to complete it all in one day. He assembled everything beautifully, including the South Shore night stand. But this dresser had multiple things missing from it including hardware as well as missing holes that had to be drilled in at the location of assembly. It rocks right and left aggressively to the point that I have to be careful with what I place on it and how many clothes I put in the drawers. The drawers on the inside are falling apart no matter how many times I tighten the screws and some of the drawers even overlap and don't close correctly. This dresser is basically not sustainable in any way. I have taken it apart and tightened all of the parts 3 times now and at this point I just want to throw it in a dumpster. HIGHLY do not recommend.

I purchased this product as a dresser for clothing. During the installation, I noticed I came across some shortcomings. I did review the installation pamphlet. Upon reviewing this pamphlet, I noticed there were no text script. There were only photograph illustrations with numbering on pieces/parts. I read page by page and attempted to assemble this item. I accidentally broke a small wood piece that connects to the drawers. With that connector piece breaking, some other screws pulled out of their sockets. I have installed several pieces of furniture before without breaking anything. The instructions were terrible. I did not create this product. Therefore, for proper installation, I would assume readable instructions would be provided for liability purposes, but no there are only photographs. Some individuals were able to assemble this product, I was not. I am now going to have to go to a furniture store to purchase something of better quality then recycle wood with poor instructions. Stay away from this one.

OK, a few things about this product. First of all, while it's not *super* solid, it's really not bad at all, certainly not given the price. But the person in the currently most-helpful review has it exactly right, I think. You absolutely have to make sure the little cam shaft thingies are installed properly, and that can be easy to screw up if you're not familiar with them. To reiterate: make sure the bolt is all the way seated in its hole, that the wooden pieces you're fastening together are flush with each other when you start turning the cam, and that you turn the cam the full 180 degrees with a flathead screwdriver until it won't turn any more, even with a little oopmh. If you don't do that, you're going to have problems. Also, it can take a little finagling to get the drawers seated properly in the dresser. When you've got it right, the top of the top drawer should fit neatly under the top of the dresser. It took me several tries to get it right. At least one of the pictures I'm seeing here look like the drawers aren't really in properly. The thing does come in a zillion pieces and it is extremely tedious and time-consuming to assemble, but not too difficult. EXCEPT. It turns out one of the pieces I had -- the back piece of one of the drawers -- was drilled incorrectly. The holes weren't in the right places. Unfortunately, this was the piece I grabbed for the first drawer I tried to assemble and you do NOT want to know how much time and confusion and frustration it cost me trying to figure out what the heck I was doing wrong that it wasn't lining up properly before I realized that this particular piece was different from the four other supposedly identical pieces included in the box. Grrrrrr. I called the number provided in the assembly manual, and the company was very good to deal with. They answered their phone right away, on a Saturday. The person I spoke to was very friendly and helpful, made sure she understood which replacement parts I needed -- I also broke some of the hardware during my fruitless attempts at forcing the issue -- and said they would of course ship me the replacements for free. Since the the product shipped from them originally, they even had my shipping address already and were able to call it up. Very efficient. Assuming they're as good as their word and I get my (correct!) replacements in a few days, I am impressed with their customer service. MUCH less impressed with their quality control.
